Walnuts
‘Grafted walnuts have the advantage over seedling grown
walnuts of coming into bearing at a much younger age, 3-5 years
rather than 10-15 years. Mature height 5-7 metres. Grown on Juglans
regia (English) unless stated, alsosome available on Juglans
nigra, which is a rootstock more suitable for wetter soil types.
DUBLINS GLORY (Formerly W C 143)
A small compact tree with excellent nuts for size, colour, taste
and crackout %, with high yields. An early flowering variety, that
can only be planted in areas free from late frosts. A N. Z. selection.
MEYRIC (Formerly W/H/199/4)
A very fine nut, kernel good pale shiny colour. Plump shape and
even halves. Mild taste, with a crackout of 55%. Shell is smooth
with a bright colour. A N.Z. selection. Also available on
nigra rootstock.
REX (Formerly WC 152)
One of the main cultivars for commercial planting as it is very
high yielding and also is a smaller more compact tree ideal for
high density planting. The nuts are slightly smaller than other
varieties but have a good seal, taste and colour. A late flowering
variety. A N.Z. selection.
SHANNON (Formerly AH/1335)
A very promising selection from the Manawatu with all the desirable
features of a top quality nut as well as appearing to be resistant
to Walnut Blight. Clean well filled nut with a crackout of over
50%. A New Zealand selection.
WiLSONS WONDER
The very large nuts make this a very popular home variety. A vigorous
tree, yet bearing very young in life. Also available on
nigra rootstock.
