Feijoa SELLOWIANA
A small evergreen tree with glossy grey-green leaves with white
felt on the undersides and ornamental red flowers similar to a pohutukawa.
Birds are very attracted to the juicy pink petals at the base of
the flower or to suck the nectar, and probably pollinate the flowers
in the process.
The fruit is oblong and has a pineapple/strawberry scent with a
rich guava-like flavour. The flesh is yellow-green with a granular
texture and a jelly-like pulp in the centre. The fruit is very rich
in vitamin C and has a sugar content of about 6 %. Feijoas flower
Nov/Dec and fruit ripens between late April/June.
Feijoas make an excellent hedge with the added value of fruit after
about 3 years. As they are not completely self-fertile it is best
to plant at least 2 trees together. They can withstand hard frosts,
and tolerate a wide range of soils, but will not survive waterlogged
conditions.
FEIJOA - APOLLO
A Large long sweet tasting fruit with excellent flavour. The skin is light green in colour. Moderatley upright growth habit, vigorous, forms a good branching framework. A self-fertile variety with fruit ripening in April, but does best with cross-pollination.
FEIJOA - UNIQUE
Large sweet juicy fruit produced on a small tree, which bears prolifically. An excellent home garden choice as smaller and self-fertile. Fruit matures April/May.
FEIJOA - WIKU TU (Royalty)
A variety bred in Levin, it has large fruit with a firm texture. Excellent flavour, mid season variety. Needs cross-pollination. Compact grower.
