Myrtle Berry -ugni Molinae
Also know as Cranberry and Chilean Guava. A neat creeping,
evergreen shrub with small leathery leaves that often turn red.
The fruit are scarlet red, round in shape and carried on a slender
stalk out from the leaves.
Fruit taste is sharp but pleasant and they contain a significant
proportion of vitamin C. The uses for the Cranberry type berry are
great and they are a very versatile fruit being used in pies, made
into jelly, eaten raw and even made into wine.
If cooking do not over cook as they can become bitter. Murtillacan
tolerate mild frosts and prefer to be grown in a moist soil. They
are also easy to prune, as the natural compact growth requires little
more than a light trim to maintain shape. Can eventually grow up
to 2 m.
Fruit is ready from February onwards.
